Greece’s tourism in the last 15 years has experienced unprecedented growth, ranking it among the top destinations in the world, breaking one record after another every year in the number of visitors, reaching the year before the outbreak of the covid19 pandemic, the 33 million visitors according to official data. Its contribution to the Greek economy translates to about 25% of its GDP.
The sudden outbreak of the pandemic as expected reversed the steady rise of Greek tourism just as it was about to surpass the 35,000,000 arrivals in the summer of 2020 and break another arrivals record, turning it back many years after the Greek government wisely took the important decision to close borders and foreign tourism to protect the population. In the field of tourism, it has worked closely with all its official bodies and a plan has been designed to open up tourism in such a way as to prepare businesses to offer the safest services in the history of tourism. And they did it. As expected, the year 2020 was lost but the tourism companies stood up to the circumstances, saving the reputation of Greek Tourism at the most difficult year. And they did it.
