Chalkida, the best destination near Athens

Chalkida is a timeless travel destination. Built on both sides of the Evripos strait, it has always had a strong relation with the sea and is the favorite city of the Athenians and many more. Suitable for a day trip, weekend break, or even longer,  Chalkida invites you to discover it.

First stop is the old bridge of Chalkida with the special natural phenomenon in the strait of Evripos which is a timeless attraction and landmark of the city. Observe the intense vortex of the waters that change direction every six hours.

If you are lucky and stay overnight, you will have the opportunity to see the bridge open and the boats passing within breathing distance, a unique spectacle.

From the old bridge, you can walk to the seaside, along Evripos, which is the liveliest part of the city. Here you will find many cafes, restaurants in every style and for every taste and people taking a leisurely stroll.

Walking along the beach you can see the famous buildings, the hotels Palirroia and Lucy, the Kotsika Town Hall. The imposing Red House, a trademark of the city, and the house with the Statues, are samples of the architectural past of neoclassical Chalkida.

On the opposite side, on the Boeotian coast, the fortress of Karabamba dominates. It was built by the Ottomans shortly before the siege of Chalkida by Francesco Morosini in 1688. Do not hesitate to visit it and be sure not to miss the western bastion where a surprise awaits you. The exhibition of medieval sculptures that it is hosted there tells the long history of the city and its inhabitants.

For those who wish to extend their stay in the city, there are many more beauties to be discovered and you will have the opportunity to make short excursions to the surrounding area. Closer to home, you can visit the new Archaeological Museum of the city housed in an old industrial building as well as the famous temple of Aulidia Artemis. Slightly further afield, you can see the picturesque villages of central Evia and visit the archeological site of Eretria, its theater and Museum.
